August 1st 1983, the Tour de France is well and truly finished, the yellow jersey goes to the garage. A cycling enthusiast, Sempé literally imported the little figure on to the cover of the New Yorker, making his drawings a constant dialogue between the deepest France and the paradoxes of New York. Here he saturates the space with wheels and frames, tight as Manhattan's skyscrapers.
